Ahead of Matchday 1 for the 2025 MLS season there was no storyline bigger than San Diego FC making their club debut against the reigning champions LA Galaxy in LA. According to MLS.com, expert analysis slated the new San Diego Club to finish dead last in the western conference so it was evident from the get-go that SDFC would have their hands full against the LA Galaxy.
Despite the troubling factors presented to SDFC prior to the match they proved there is no stage too big and were able to rally towards a 2-0 victory against the defending champs in their backyard. With the opening season victory, SDFC now becomes the 3rd franchise to win their innagural game joining LAFC (2018) and St. Louis City SC (2023).
Probably the most anticipated match this week saving the best for last as they both came out keeping things leveled through the first half. With both teams looking to score the opening goal of the season San Diego started the party in the 57th minute of the match with a goal by Anders Dreyer. From the start San Diego came out fierce knowing the odds are stacked against them being able to keep ongoing momentum leading to the goal scoring opportunity by Anders Dreyer.
With the game winding down while San Diego mounted a 1-0 lead LA still hanging in there creating opportunities but fell short being able to level things once again. But, in a true story book ending San Diego closes the door on 1 pt with another Anders Dreyer goal with 3 minutes of extra time added. SDFC showed the belong on the biggest stage getting their first three points of the year in spectacular fashion.
A key component to keep in mind of is the masterful performance of Anders Dreyer. This was his MLS debut previously playing for Anderlecht in Belgium from 2023-2025 scoring 26 goals in that time frame. With his multi goal performance he is now tied with six others for top goal scorer in the league. San Diego is buzzing right now and should be interesting to see where the season takes them.
